God my Saviour….Jesus my saviour??

Many people believe that Jesus must be God because both are called saviour. They often will point to verses where God himself specifically states that there is no saviour beside him

Isaiah 43:11 I, even I, am the Lord; and beside me there is no saviour.

Isaiah 43:3 For I am the Lord thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour: I gave Egypt for thy ransom, Ethiopia and Seba for thee.

Isaiah 45:21 Tell ye, and bring them near; yea, let them take counsel together: who hath declared this from ancient time? who hath told it from that time? have not I the Lord? and there is no God else beside me; a just God and a Saviour; there is none beside me.

Isaiah 49:26 And I will feed them that oppress thee with their own flesh; and they shall be drunken with their own blood, as with sweet wine: and all flesh shall know that I the Lord am thy Saviour and thy Redeemer, the mighty One of Jacob.

Hosea 13:4 Yet I am the Lord thy God from the land of Egypt, and thou shalt know no god but me: for there is no saviour beside me.

So we see God is the Saviour and he states that there is no saviour besides him.

However, it is very clear that Jesus is also called saviour

At his birth we are told that this day in the city of David a saviour is born who is Jesus.

Luke 2:11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

The Christ, who is Jesus,  is attested to being the saviour of the world.

Luke 4:42 And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.

There are numerous more verses that refer to Jesus as the saviour.

Titus 1:4 To Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour.

Titus 3:6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;

2 Peter 1:11 For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

So if there is no saviour besides God and Jesus is the saviour then Jesus must be God. Simple logic. End of the debate. ……BUT, things are not as straightforward as this would at first appear. There is actually more to it than this and the Bible tells us more and actually explains just how Jesus is the saviour but ISN’T God.

Neither God nor Jesus are the only ones called Saviour.

In Nehemiah we are very clearly told that God GAVE Israel saviours who saved them out of the hand of their enemies.

Nehemiah 9:27 Therefore thou deliveredst them into the hand of their enemies, who vexed them: and in the time of their trouble, when they cried unto thee, thou heardest them from heaven; and according to thy manifold mercies thou gavest them saviours, who saved them out of the hand of their enemies.

In 2 Kings 13 we see again that God gave Israel a saviour who saved them from the hand of the Syrians.

2 Kings 13: 5 (And the Lord gave Israel a saviour, so that they went out from under the hand of the Syrians: and the children of Israel dwelt in their tents, as beforetime.

The Hebrew word translated as saviour is יָשַׁע Yasha and means to deliverer.

We see this EXACT same word used and translated as deliverer in Judges chapter 3

Judges 3:9 And when the children of Israel cried unto the Lord, the Lord raised up a deliverer to the children of Israel, who delivered them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother.

Again in Judges we see that God raised up a deliverer who we are told was Ehud the son of Gera, a Benjamite.

Judges 3:15 But when the children of Israel cried unto the Lord, the Lord raised them up a deliverer, Ehud the son of Gera, a Benjamite, a man lefthanded: and by him the children of Israel sent a present unto Eglon the king of Moab.

So we see that God himself, who stated that there is no saviour but him, raised up and gave Israel deliverers/saviours.

We are told in the book of Acts that God sent Moses to be a ruler and deliverer.

Acts 7:35 This Moses whom they refused, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge? the same did God send to be a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel which appeared to him in the bush.

Moses was a deliverer, he was a saviour.

However, we know that it was God who delivered his people from Egypt.

Exodus 18:8 And Moses told his father in law all that the Lord had done unto Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel’s sake, and all the travail that had come upon them by the way, and how the Lord delivered them.

God delivered his people from Egypt through Moses.  Just as God delivered his people from the hands of their enemies by way of the other saviours/deliverers that he raised up and sent as we have already seen attested to.

And this is the EXACT same way in which Jesus is our saviour.

The Father, who is God, sent the son to be the saviour.

1 John 4:14 And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.

Just as he sent the other saviours.

However, rather than just his people Christ was sent to be the saviour of the WORLD.

God EXALTED Jesus TO BE a prince and saviour.

Acts 5:31 Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.

This was according to the promise. God promised to raise up a saviour.

Acts 13:23 Of this man’s seed hath God according to his promise raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus:

Just as God had saved THROUGH Moses and the other saviours, God saves now THROUGH his son Jesus.

The prophecy that God would send a saviour, a great one,  is found back in Isaiah

Isaiah 19:20 and it shall be for a sign and for a witness unto the Lord of hosts in the land of Egypt: for they shall cry unto the Lord because of the oppressors, and he shall send them a saviour, and a great one, and he shall deliver them.

Jesus is the saviour not because he is God but because God has made him the saviour. God gave Jesus to be the saviour. God will save through the son.

Those who have the son have the father.

1 John 2:23 Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: (but) he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.

God is the only saviour,  however, God uses people through which to save.
