The Laws of the other 4 covenants
Below are a list of all the laws that formed each covenant. (Excludes the laws of the Mosaic covenant(s)
Adamic Covenant – Noahic Covenant – Abrahamic – Covenant Messianic Covenant
The Adamic Covenant was simple. There was at the time no sin. There were no other gods. There was no murder. Adam and Eve were given just 4 laws to follow. These were the commandments given to Adam.
Adamic Covenant
Multiply
Genesis 1: 28And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
Plants for food (no animals were given to be eaten)
Genesis 1: 29And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.
Genesis 1: 30And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.
Eating of every tree in the Garden of Eden permitted
Genesis 2:16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:
The fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil prohibited
Genesis 2:17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
There was no command not to kill. There was no punishment set for killing.
Adams sin was eating of this tree
Genesis 3:6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
Genesis 3:11 And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?
This command is not included in any other covenant.
However, once Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden of Eden we start to see new laws being added.
Cain’s punishment for killing Abel was not death.
Genesis 4:11 And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother’s blood from thy hand; 12 When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.
Cain even complained that THIS punishment was too much.
Genesis 4:13 And Cain said unto the LORD, My punishment is greater than I can bear.
It was actually Cain that had said people would want to kill him. There was nothing to suggest that anyone would, but at this time Cain ow knew what killing was.
Genesis 4:14 Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me.
God then added a condition for killing Cain. This was clearly not in place before Cain’s statement.
Do not kill Cain
Genesis 4: 15 And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.
After the flood God made a new covenant with Noah and his descendants. In this covenant God now included the command not to kill and instilled the punishment for doing so. He also removed the prohibition to eat animals although he did not allow the eating of animals where the blood remained. As humans were no longer in the garden of Eden, nor did they have access to the garden, the command not to eat the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil was no longer relevant so was not included.
God made a promise to himself that he would not destroy the earth again
Genesis 8: 21 And the LORD smelled a sweet savour; and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man’s sake; for the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done.
Noahic Covenant
Be fruitful and multiply
Genesis 9: 1 And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.
Genesis 9: 7 And you, be ye fruitful, and multiply; bring forth abundantly in the earth, and multiply therein.
Eating of animals permitted
Genesis 9: 2 And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the air, upon all that moveth upon the earth, and upon all the fishes of the sea; into your hand are they delivered. 3 Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things.
Flesh with blood prohibited
Genesis 9:4 But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat.
Killing another human prohibited and punishment stated
Genesis 9:5 and surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man’s brother will I require the life of man. 6 Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man.
The sign of the covenant:
Genesis 9:8 And God spake unto Noah, and to his sons with him, saying,9 And I, behold, I establish my covenant with you, and with your seed after you; 10 And with every living creature that is with you, of the fowl, of the cattle, and of every beast of the earth with you; from all that go out of the ark, to every beast of the earth. 11 And I will establish my covenant with you; neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth. 12 And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: 13 I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth. 14 And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud: 15 And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16 And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth. 17 And God said unto Noah, This is the token of the covenant, which I have established between me and all flesh that is upon the earth.
In the Abrahmic covenant Abraham was simply given the command to initiate circumcision amongst his people. There was no law given neither was there any law of the Noahic removed. The covenant of Noah remained for ALL people but circumcision was specifically given to Abraham and his descendants.
Abrahamic Covenant
The Abrahamic Covenant was given with no conditions. God made an unconditional binding covenant with Abraham of his own choice. It was God that came to Abraham and asked him to come into covenant with him. Abraham did not seek out YHWH, rather it was the other way around.
Abraham believed God, it was this that was counted as righteousness for him.
Genesis 15:6 And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness
It was because of this promise, that he would pass down to Isaac and Jacob that he would keep a remnant of Israel.
Deuteronomy 7:
6For thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God: the LORD thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth.
7The LORD did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because ye were more in number than any people; for ye were the fewest of all people: 8But because the LORD loved you, and because he would keep the oath which he had sworn unto your fathers, hath the LORD brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bondmen, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.
Deuteronomy 9:5Not for thy righteousness, or for the uprightness of thine heart, dost thou go to possess their land: but for the wickedness of these nations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee, and that he may perform the word which the LORD sware unto thy fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
The fathers were not given the laws that were given to Israel.
Circumcision initiated
Genesis 17: 10 This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised. 11 And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you. 12 And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed.
Uncircumcised to be cut off from the people
Genesis 17: 14 And the uncircumcised man child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken my covenant.
Those that were not circumcised were not part of the covenant.
After Jesus died and was resurrected a new law (New Torah as it were) was implemented in the new covenant. This law was simple. Believe on the name of the son (by which we love God) and we love as Jesus loved.
Messianic Covenant (New Covenant)
Love as Jesus loved
John 13:34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
Believe on the name of the son and love as he loved
1 John 3:23 And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.
