Was Mary sinless?

Many Christians, mainly Catholics,  believe that Mary was sinless.

It must be noted that there is not one verse that states that Mary was without Sin.

However within the scriptures, Mary is actually described as having sin. In order to demonstrate this we must look very carefully at what the Bible says.

In the book of Luke Mary had taken Jesus to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord according to the Law of Moses.

Luke 2:21 And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb. 22 And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord; 23 (As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;)

She also offered a sacrifice according to the law of the Lord.

Luke 2:24 And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.

So we have to go and look at what the law states regarding the sacrifice.

This can be found in Leviticus chapter 12. We see that a woman that has given birth to a male child that she is unclean for 7 days.

Leviticus 12: 1And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 2Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a woman have conceived seed, and born a man child: then she shall be unclean seven days; according to the days of the separation for her infirmity shall she be unclean.

On the 8th day is when the child is to be circumcised.

Leviticus 12: 3And in the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised.

The woman would then be required purifying for a further 33 days.

Leviticus 12: 4And she shall then continue in the blood of her purifying three and thirty days; she shall touch no hallowed thing, nor come into the sanctuary, until the days of her purifying be fulfilled. 5But if she bear a maid child, then she shall be unclean two weeks, as in her separation: and she shall continue in the blood of her purifying threescore and six days.

At the end of her purifying be over the woman is required to bring a lamb for a burnt offering and a young pigeon or a turtledove for a SIN offering.

Leviticus 12: 6And when the days of her purifying are fulfilled, for a son, or for a daughter, she shall bring a lamb of the first year for a burnt offering, and a young pigeon, or a turtledove, for a sin offering, unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, unto the priest: 7Who shall offer it before the LORD, and make an atonement for her; and she shall be cleansed from the issue of her blood.

Now if the woman cannot offer a lamb she is required to offer TWO TURTLEDOVES or TWO YOUNG PIGEONS, one for a burnt offering and one for a SIN offering.

Leviticus 12:8 And if she be not able to bring a lamb, then she shall bring two turtles, or two young pigeons; the one for the burnt offering, and the other for a sin offering: and the priest shall make an atonement for her, and she shall be clean.

This is the sacrifice that Mary offered in Luke 2. Mary offered a sin offering according to the law of Moses as recorded in Leviticus 12.

The Bible very clearly states that Mary was not without sin.
