Are we really made in the image of God?
It is almost unanimously taught in “Christianity” today that we are made in the image of God.
This understanding comes from a passage in Genesis where Adam (man) was made in the image of God.
Genesis 1-26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
So the first man was made in the image of God and from this the teaching that we are all made in God’s image is formulated.
If we stop here and simply take this verse alone then yes we can teach that humans today, you and I are made in the image of God. However the Bible doesn’t finish at this verse and it has more to say on the issue.
The Bible says that we have been separated from God through our iniquities
Isaiah 59-2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.
It says that sin was brought in by one man, that death came from sin and that death was passed upon ALL men.
Romans 5-12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
This was because Adam disobeyed God and ate of the fruit of the tree of knowledge of Good and Evil.
Genesis 3- 6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
Adam was told that if he did so that he would die
Genesis 2-17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
So because of Adam, sin entered into the world. It is because of this sin that we are separated from God. Adam was spiritually separated (God cannot die) but also physically separated when God banished Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden.
This is when Adam first “knew” his wife and she gave birth to their first son Cain.
Cain slew Abel his brother.
The Bible says that Adam had another son that was made in his OWN image
Genesis 5-3 And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth:
Seth was made NOT in the image of God but in the image of Adam who was no longer the image of God as he had sinned and fallen away from God. It is not stated if Cain and Abel were also made in the image of Adam but seeing they were born after the fall it is very likely that they were. However certainly from Seth men were now in the image of Adam and not God. The Bible likely only records Seth being called this because Seth became the new seed .
Genesis 4- And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.
Jesus is the last Adam
1 Corinthians 15-45 And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.
Jesus is the image of God
Colossians 1-15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:
Hebrews 1-3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;
2 corinthians 4-4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.
In him there was NO sin
1 John 3-5 And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.
Through the sin of Adam death reigned but righteousness reigns because of Jesus.
Romans 5- 17 For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)
18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. 19For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.
And it is through Jesus we are restored back to God having been made a new creature
2 Corinthians 5- 17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. 18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;
We need to be CHANGED into the image of Jesus.
2 corinthians 3-1 18 But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.
If we are already in the image of God then we would not need to be changed.
We will be conformed to the image of his son, God’s son, Jesus.
Romans 8-29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren
The ONLY way to God is through his son Jesus
John 14-6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Man WAS made in the image of God however we are no longer in the Image of God but in the image of Adam until we are made a new creature in Christ, changed to the image of God’s son who is the image of God.
